Pachmarhi sits in the Satpura hills, about 1,067 metres above sea level. British Army captain James Forsyth found this place in 1857. He wrote a full book about it, called "The Highlands of Central India."
The name comes from two Hindi words — "Panch" (five) and "Marhi" (caves). Locals believe five ancient caves near the town gave Pachmarhi its name.
Thick forests cover the hills all around. These forests are part of the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO. You can spot leopards, Indian bison and giant squirrels here on a jungle safari.
Summers stay cool here — much cooler than the rest of Madhya Pradesh. Monsoon turns the hills bright green, with waterfalls in full flow. Winter mornings are misty and perfect for sightseeing.

Locals call it Jamuna Prapat. Water drops from about 150 feet and forms a clear pool at the bottom. The name comes from the buzzing, bee-like sound of falling water.
A natural cave temple for Lord Shiva. Rock formations here look like matted hair, or "jata." A small stream flows through the cave, adding to its calm, spiritual feel.
Five rock-cut caves on a small hill. Legend says the Pandavas stayed here during their exile. Historians believe Buddhist monks actually built them for meditation.
Also called the Fairy Pool. A small, shallow waterfall pool inside the forest. British women reportedly bathed here in colonial times, which gave the spot its name.
The highest point in Madhya Pradesh at 1,352 m. Best known for its sunrise and sunset views over the Satpura valley. Only forest-permitted vehicles can go here.
A cave temple for Shiva with a naturally formed lingam. Crowded during Mahashivratri, when pilgrims from across MP come for special prayers.
Home to sloth bears, leopards, wild boars and deer. Take a jeep safari or a boat ride on the Denwa River to explore the forest.
A deep gorge, nearly 300 feet down, surrounded by steep cliffs. Named after a "handi" (pot) — the valley looks like one from above.
